Privacy Policy

Your light, your data.

Last updated 30 May 2026

The short version. gilded uses your location only to calculate sun times for your spot. We don't ask for your name, email, or an account. We don't track you across apps, show ads, or sell your data — ever.

Who we are

gilded (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is a mobile app that tells you the best times of day to take photos outside — golden hour, blue hour, sunrise, and sunset — based on your location and the date. This policy explains what data the app handles and why.

What we collect, and why

  • Location (GPS coordinates). With your permission, the app reads your device's current location to calculate sun times and to fetch the local weather forecast for your spot. Your coordinates are sent to our own backend (api.gilded.photo) solely to perform these calculations. We do not store a history of where you've been.
  • Saved locations. If you pin favorite spots, those places are stored on your device so the app can show their light conditions. They aren't tied to your identity.
  • Basic install information. When the app starts it registers an anonymous installation: a randomly generated device identifier (created by the app, not your hardware ID), the platform (iOS/Android), the app version, the OS version, and your time zone. This helps us understand which versions are in use and support the app. It contains nothing that identifies you personally.
  • Anonymous usage events. The app may record anonymous events (for example, “opened the today screen”) to understand which features are useful. These are not linked to your identity.

We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, photos, contacts, or any account credentials, because gilded has no accounts and no sign-in.

Notifications

If you enable reminders, the app schedules local notifications on your device before each magic hour. These are generated and delivered entirely on your phone — no push server is involved, and no notification token leaves your device.

Third-party services

Weather and place-name (geocoding) data is provided by OpenWeather. Your coordinates (or a place-name search query) are forwarded to OpenWeather through our backend so it can return a forecast or matching locations. We send only what's needed for that request and nothing that identifies you. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-app tracking SDKs.

How long we keep data

Weather and geocoding responses are cached briefly on our backend to reduce repeated requests. Anonymous install and event records are retained only as long as needed to operate and improve the app. Data stored on your device (preferences, saved locations) stays until you delete it or uninstall the app.

Your choices & rights

  • Location. You can deny or revoke location permission at any time in your device settings. The app simply won't be able to compute times for your current spot; you can still search locations manually.
  • Notifications. Turn reminders on or off in the app or in your device settings.
  • Deletion. Uninstalling the app removes all on-device data. To request deletion of an anonymous install/event record on our backend, contact us at the email below.

Depending on where you live (for example, under the EU GDPR), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data. Because we hold no information that identifies you, requests may be limited to the anonymous install identifier described above.

Children

gilded is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new “last updated” date.
